"Dear Abby": Redefy California's Rendition
(inspired by the following advice column: click here

If the term "Dear Abby" does not bode familiar to you, perhaps contextualize it with the uprising of the "Queer Century," which initiated in 1970 and spanned onward until the present day: whereupon rights for those a part of the LGBTQIA+ community were further progressed, specifically with the establishment of "secret societies," such as the Mattachine, or the several chapters of Daughters of Bilitis. With the establishment of the aformentioned societies came the publication of several free-verse magazines and articles, such as The Ladder, or One, which promoted intersectionality and outletting of shared-experiences that surround identifying within the LGBTQIA+ community during a distasteful time period in which that identification was perceived as a grave mis-doing. "Dear Abby" posed as an informal outlet, advice column more specifically, a part of a larger magazine: Pauline Phillips initiated this advice column and would assume the persona of "Abby" who was responsible for providing resources, advice, and consolement for those who were queer and unable to openly express themselves within the confines of their own home or within society. "Abby" centered a majority of her advice around the universal truth that all individuals should be able to outwardly express themselves and accept themselves regardless of the social normal or perhaps "skewing that social normal." She emphasized the fact that one should not allow the values and morals of another individual to impress upon themselves or modify/toy around with the way in which they express themselves: if they are openly queer (not selectively so) then it is solely within their power to accept themselves and others and perhaps promote a camaraderie on which civil liberties can be built: it is NOT within their power, however, to select or perhaps "choose" to be straight--so owning thyself is the utmost important (for changing to fit within the confines or mold of society is only harmful and restrictive in terms of self expression in the long run).
It is with this "Dear Abby" rendition, that redefycalifornia is establishing its own advice column: not exclusive for struggles faced by those a part of the LGBTQIA+ community (is included), but ALSO alternative struggles: such as experienced racism, struggle with mental health and lack of access to resources, socioeconomic divide and how that promotes lack of access to proper education, health care, etc, period poverty, perpetuating insecurities, etc.
Whatever your question, qualm, or concern is surrounding these present day (teenage) issue(s), we will respond with perhaps our personal experiences--to highlight common ground and prove that you are not alone in this fight--or a list of resources which you can address the issue at hand or refer you elsewhere for PROFESSIONAL support. Please note that we are by
NO MEANS professionally qualified: this is simply an outlet for teen-on-teen talk, where shared-experiences can be highlighted, and we can actively band together to redefine whatever societal narrative is undermining the rights and voices of those a part of the teenage demographic.

   "Dear RedefyCalifornia

Voice or air your grievance here: it can be a call for advice in regards to a societal or teenage issue which you individually face or your entire community faces. For instance, experienced racism, sexism, homophobia, lack of access to mental health resources,  undermining on the basis of skin color, gender, or sexuality, etc, all pose as viable issues to discuss. What are you actively struggling with: or conversely, what do you see your peers actively struggling with that needs to be addressed. Redefycalifornia is here to console your grievances (and publish them, anonymously) in order to reach a larger audience of individuals who are too facing the same issues and perhaps need access to the resources or advice we are providing.

*Please note that none of the following questions are required, nor is there a minimal or maximum word count for which you should stay within or match up to. This is essentially an open-ended diary entry, where you can voice any (appropriate) grievance that you have as a teenager attempting to navigate the societal norm(s) and obstacles presented before you. The incentive behind this platform is to not only to provide you individually with advice and online resources, but also to provide others with an example of insecurity, struggle, or hardship that they can perhaps relate to: it is not easy to reign triumphant over that of adversity ALONE, so understanding that there is someone else that shares your same grievance and perhaps connecting with that individual is encouraged and even imperative.

Thank you for courageously voicing your grievances! We will provide you with feedback, advice, and resources which you can access and apply in order to resolve the issue at hand.
